In this project, each student was to individually choose a social issue to advocate for it. After everyone presented, we were put into groups where we all had similar topics. As a group we created a mind map where we brainstormed and connected our social issues together along with the social needs and biology. After that, we had many workshops for the purpose's of learning how to create a thesis, how to format essays, proper MLA format. We created our first rough draft of a cover idea individually that was then shared with our group and the class for critique. After that we made a second individual cover draft to each present as a group to two professionals critique. We then combined our ideas to create one cover as a group. In the writing portion, we began writing our first draft of our essays that were about 3 pages long. They were then critiqued and created a 2nd draft. We got critique again on both cover and essay to produce our final products. After that our zine book layout was created and critiqued, and we had a 6 page essay that was condensed to 500 words to be placed in our zine. After that it was printing and assembling, and getting ready for the Chula Vista Zine Fest.

I have developed into a teen advocate for my social topic - feminism - by having conversations with the people I've met at all of our exhibitions. I think this is something that was very valuable from our exhibit stations, that it was played our purposely for people to come up and talk to the creators. I think this is the most important part because you can have actual conversations with people and change their opinions and perspective about something. Many people shared their personal stories to me as well which was very touching they felt the comfort of sharing. I feel like I had made a difference by my voice, although it might've not been a huge audience, one person is enough.
I want people to know what women face everyday, I want women to know what they have been thought to think is normal, I want women to take care and love themselves for who they are because that's what's special, because you are different then everyone else and that it isn't a bad thing. At the beginning of this semester I knew what the basic (food, water, shelter) and socials needs (status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, fairness) were. What I didn't know is how important social needs are for each of us to have and feel. Through the lens of my social topic, I noticed many people suffer through not having these social needs. For example relatedness and certainty for having a body that is acceptable in society. |
