Podcast hackathon

Introduction

We wrote, recorded, and edited a script about a perspective of a character from the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (ATDPTI) by Sherman Alexie . By doing so, it deepened our understanding about what was actually happening in the book by each characters opinion. I learned that making a podcast is not that easy because there is a lot of steps to it. But I think recording is the best part because it was really fun for my group to create sound effects and record as a different character.

Charecter Sheet
When we were creating the character sheet we were all contributing, someone would type and 2 people would look through ATDPTI  for information.  We planned to record in the basketball court and we recorded with a video in the background of a game playing, we also planned to have his personality really funny so we created him really funny based on his lines in the book. In our script we added that in the book they described him as "wanting to laugh or hug you". Maybe we could've had a scene where he hugs somebody would have been good to add because it shows a bit more of personality not just that he's really tuff and a "bad-ass".

Script
We started writing our script really late but ended up finishing it really fast because we dived the work between both of us. But before creating it we had a vision for our podcast, we don't usually like podcasts because we find them being a bit boring at times, and just talking. So we wanted to create it a bit more entertaining with a spin on it and wrote our script with humor and many sound affects so you can actually picture in your head what was occurring in the scenes. Then once we finished writing we went right into recording. It was a lot of fun recording because we put a lot of creativity in it and were really trying to picture ourselves in our characters shoes. We thought about what a regular day would be like for him, and even music he would listen to. In some of the recordings we have Mexican novela's playing and music. Although our character does not understand it we feel as if he is quirky enough to watch/listen to it. Sometimes we would have to record over and over agin because we could't stop laughing. I'm glad it was that experience because I thought it would be very boring and it ended up not being the way I thought it would be. I was not the lead roll but I played some background people and our characters best friend. I kind of was directing the group most of the time and getting there opinions on it because I wasn't always the one speaking in these recordings. As we went we didn't really change much just worded a couple of lines differently along the way.

Scrum Board

The purpose of this "Scrum Board" is to stay organized and on task, this also gave us some motivation and reminded us we had stuff to do. The first couple of days we used this, then we stopped using it because mostly, we forgot about it but we were always on task and busy recording so we didn't really need it at the time.

Final Audio Diary
In a lot of these recording we were in a quiet room and had a lap top playing youtube videos of music, shows, supermarkets, and basketball games.. In some of them we went in the actual halls so it sounded like school in our recording, we used kitchen refrigerators and made some affects like a car crash using our vocals and a few trash cans... We decided on who the character would be really easily, one of us wanted to be one character and I wanted to be another character, so it was simple. It was hard finding quiet spots to record at because most of the offices and rooms were occupied. We had a really humorous and creative script so most of the time we were laughing a lot trying to record.
